Toussaint L’Ouverture

This poster celebrates a great hero of the 18th century, Toussaint L’Ouverture, the leader of Haiti’s revolution. He led the world’s greatest uprising against the European slave system. L’Ouverture’s forces defeated armies from France, Spain, and England and opened the road to independence and emancipation. He was later kidnapped by the French and removed from his homeland much as the United States would do two hundred years later to Haiti’s first democratically elected president, Jean Bertrand Aristide.
