The phrase “Oppression Olympics” became popularized (first in BIPOC feminist circles) after a public conversation between Betita Martinez and Angela Davis in 1993. Davis writes that Martinez “urges us not to engage in … a futile hierarchy of suffering, but rather to harness our rage at persisting injustices in order to strengthen our opposition to an increasingly complex system of domination, which weaves together racism, patriarchy, homophobia and global capitalist exploitation.” Read more about why Ricardo made this piece here, or on the calendar page.

Here’s our free downloadable and printable monthly calendar page for February 2026. Here in Minneapolis, the U.S. federal assault on immigrants and people of color has only intensified over the past weeks. As our community cares for our neighbors in hiding, we also mourn and remember those displaced, disappeared or murdered–including white bystanders Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The quote in our featured RLM artwork this month gives us solace: “There Are Stars whose radiance is visible on earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world even though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.” It was said by Hannah Sanesh (1921-1944), a Jewish resistance fighter from a time that bears far too much resemblance to our present moment.

Ricardo says, “This illustration of a musician composing and editing lyrics in their kitchen while holding a guitar, began as a doodle from an old sketchbook that I grabbed when heading to a park to hear some music. It ripened from there.”

You’ve heard of a zombie apocalypse… but how about the “Zoombie” apocalypse?

Drawn for Halloween 2020 at the height of the COVID19 pandemic, this illustration satirizes the new era of video “Zoom” meetings. The 16 zombie participants represent the usual cast of Zoom characters. One is missing from the frame; another’s cat is stealing the show; another Zoombie’s camera shows only the top of their head.

Your murder at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri cops on August 9, 2014 set off a firestorm of protest and revolt in Ferguson – where it was met with militarized police violence – and beyond. You were neither the first nor the last, little brother, but your murder opened the floodgates of rage against police brutality and the racist oppression it serves. This poster honors that history and serves notice of the change that must come.

This month’s art features a portion of the poster Century of Struggle, commemorating U.S. people’s movements from 1900-2000, by Ricardo Levins Morales and Janna Schneider. This detail references several women’s led labor struggles in the early 1900’s. The Women’s Trade Union League was instrumental in supporting garment industry workers, including during the “Uprising of the 20,000”—the ladies tailor strikers whose labor action is commemorated today as International Women’s Day. Also pictured, the Emergency Women’s Brigade was an informal group of women who rushed to the front lines during police attacks on the 1936-1937 UAW Flint Sit Down strike, widely credited with turning the tides of the battle.
