This button features the title and refrain of Woody Guthrie’s 1944 song, All You Fascists Bound to Lose. Since its original popularity amidst the Nazis’ World War II defeat, the song has been repeatedly covered and adapted by successive generations of anti-fascists.
The button design, which includes a woodcut portrait of the folk singer, is in the style of Ricardo’s 1979 Woody Guthrie poster, one of his earliest best-sellers. Guthrie (1912-1967) often performed with the message “this machine kills fascists” on his guitar, and the long-lasting lyrics to his protest songs made him an North American folk hero. That said, the erasure of settler-colonialism in perhaps his most popular song, “This Land Is Your Land” has led to significant criticism and reflection about indigenous sovereignty and U.S. empire.
