Bayard Rustin

Bayard Rustin was an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, and instrumental in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He also directed a mass boycott of segregated NYC schools in 1964.  The Kennedy administration threatened to isolate him for being gay. As a result, he was sometimes sidelined, but always brought back for his organizing abilities.

Rustin drifted to the right later in his life, but left an indelible mark on the struggles of his day.

This poster commemorates his many contributions to the Black freedom struggle, featuring his portrait and the quote: “Take power away from those who misuse it – at which point they become human, too.”
