Voter ID Brand

So-called “Voter ID” laws – more accurately known as voter restriction – are just one of the faces of the new Jim Crow.

This satirical yet serious poster shows the “whitening” effect of such “voter deterrent/voter detergent“. The cartoon spokesman in the corner says, “For elections so white, you’ll think it’s 1950!” He sports a tag with the name “ALEC”, the moniker of a corporate lobbying group pushing right-wing ballot measures.

When I made this poster in 2012, my home state of Minnesota became one of many fighting to prevent these new restrictions on voting. We won at the ballot box — but the fight continues nationally today with mixed results.
