Defend Detroit (Notecard)

The art in this image is based off of Diego Rivera’s murals at the Detroit Institute of Art. The murals were made in 1932-33 when Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo lived in Detroit. Rivera’s murals portray various facets of Detroit’s History.

In 2013 Detroit was placed under the dystopian control of an “emergency manager” appointed by the state governor, supposedly due to the city’s financial problems. This essentially invalidated all local elections. The emergency manager – head of the junta, we might say about a different country – tried to sell off the art museum, creating an uproar he wasn’t prepared for. He eventually backed down.

This image (also available as a poster) uses the design of Rivera’s murals to tell the story of privatization and resistance in Detroit. Look closely at the words in the signs as people face off against the bulldozing of public infrastructure.
