Your murder at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri cops on August 9, 2014 set off a firestorm of protest and revolt in Ferguson – where it was met with militarized police violence – and beyond. You were neither the first nor the last, little brother, but your murder opened the floodgates of rage against police brutality and the racist oppression it serves. This poster honors that history and serves notice of the change that must come.

These translated lines are from the poem “Where Everything Is Music” (translated from the original Persian) by 13th century poet, scholar and theologian Rumi. They speak both to authentic living, and to the need for action in troubled times. In this poster, originally made for the Macalester College Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, a lone figure sits among flowers underneath an archway of lush green plants. This month’s art features a portion of the poster Century of Struggle, commemorating U.S. people’s movements from 1900-2000, by Ricardo Levins Morales and Janna Schneider. This detail references several women’s led labor struggles in the early 1900’s. The Women’s Trade Union League was instrumental in supporting garment industry workers, including during the “Uprising of the 20,000”—the ladies tailor strikers whose labor action is commemorated today as International Women’s Day. Also pictured, the Emergency Women’s Brigade was an informal group of women who rushed to the front lines during police attacks on the 1936-1937 UAW Flint Sit Down strike, widely credited with turning the tides of the battle.

Labor and environmental activists came together in solidarity, providing generations to come with inspiration. This design by Ricardo was commissioned after the victory, by the United Steelworkers union.

Here is your free, printable monthly calendar for May 2024. This month’s artwork is an event poster Ricardo made in 1990 for the Jackson State & Kent State Commemorative Conference, 20 years after the May 1970 killings of antiwar students by the U.S. military. At the time of writing, encampments for justice in Palestine and against U.S. complicity in Israel’s genocide there are springing up at college campuses around the nation, facing varying levels of state repression. As the event poster says, let us “learn from the past to build for the future”.
