Amilcar Cabral (Notecard)
Amilcar Cabral led the successful anti-colonial struggle in Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde against a Portuguese occupation backed by the money and arms of the United States. His analyses of culture, identity and popular resistance had a profound influence on struggles across Africa. His writings were (and continue to be) important to me. My dogeared copies of his essays and speeches have been read and reread over the years. I am thrilled to finally do my small part to pay tribute to a great teacher.
Text reads: “The national liberation of a people is the regaining of the historical personality of that people, its return to history through the destruction of the imperialist domination to which it was subjected.”
