Coffee on the Wind

After the United States gained independence, the new nation had to find sources for imports that had previously come from other British colonies. For a brief few years in the early 1780s, Danish-controlled St. Croix became the major coffee importer. St. Croix supplied the merchants of Philadelphia who dominated the trade.
