South Africa: The Struggle Continues
South African apartheid–the institutionalized system of white supremacy that segregated all aspects of social, economic and political life–lasted for much of the 20th century. One chapter of this great injustice concluded in the early 1990s, with the release of long-term political prisoners such as Nelson Mandela and the first general election with the participation of Black voters.
In the decades since however, economic injustice has persisted and racial discrimination has taken on new forms. Most recently in the 2020s, widespread xenophobia has led to attacks against African and Asian immigrants to South Africa. The stolen lives and persistent fear amongst communities today is an echo of white Apartheid-era brutality.
South Africa: Apartheid was defeated. The struggle for justice continues.
